This university has once again reached that stage in history when people are talking about the New Yale, presumably to be distinguished from the Old Yale, which in its own day was presumably considered new. Wishing to share in this modernity, we have chosen The New Journal as the name for our publication. Besides, things seemed slow around here.
In 1967, The New Journal was founded at Yale University under this mission statement. Today, we continue to tell the stories of Yale and New Haven, publishing five issues of investigative journalism, narrative nonfiction, and creative work each academic year. One of Yale’s longest-running and widest-circulating publications, The New Journal distributes 1,000 print copies of each issue throughout Yale campus and New Haven–all free of charge.
The New Journal alumni have gone on to win Pulitzer prizes, become international bureau chiefs, and join staff at publications like The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic. The New Journal has been recognized by The Society of Professional Journalists for excellence in student journalism over six times in the past decade. In 2021, the SPJ named The New Journal the “Best Student Magazine in the Country.”
